The British Soap Awards this year were particularly bittersweet for Danielle Harold, who portrayed Lola Pearce on EastEnders. Although Hollyoaks won the award, her character’s sad brain tumour plotline was nominated.
Tuesday night saw the broadcast of the British Soap Awards 2023, and EastEnders actress Danielle Harold was nominated for the Best Storyline award.
Her character Lola Pearce’s swan song was broadcast last week after she lost her battle with a brain cancer and passed away at home.
Although the Hollyoaks episode’s incel storyline, in which Eric Foster (played by Angus Castle-Doughty) targeted Frank Kauer’s Mason Chen-Williams and Nikki Sanderson’s Maxine Minniver, won the Best Storyline award, many ITV viewers were unimpressed.
@Xchloewest tweeted: “Sorry, but how EastEnders and Lola didn’t win that award has thrown me #BritishSoapAwards.”
The following statement was made by @Mikepriestley13: “Best storyline – I’m shocked Lola storyline didn’t win there #BritishSoapAwards.”

The irate tweet from @Shel_33x read, “Should have gone to Danielle Harold this one #BritishSoapAwards.”
Lola’s storyline deserves that, according to @Megamouth_88. British Soap Awards #EastEnders.
The tweet from @Iona_Ross97 stated, “Saying goodbye to Lola should’ve won that #BritishSoapAwards #soapawards.”
Hollyoaks won, but Sophie commented, “Well deserved. I’m not aware of any soap opera that has ever featured an incel narrative.

When she was given the distinction, she remarked, “This isn’t for me. This is undoubtedly for each and every person who has collaborated with me along the route and has been or is currently experiencing a brain tumour.
“I can’t thank all of you enough for helping me,” the speaker said. “Their time has been so precious to them and even more so to me.”

When EastEnders received the Soap of the Year award at the conclusion of the ceremony, Danielle re-entered the stage.
Jane McDonald, the host, remarked, “A huge congratulations to EastEnders, I’m off for a knees-up with my favourite soap stars, I’m so excited.” “I’ll be seeing you all soon.”
Singer Jane hosted the British Soap Awards for the first time, and social media users applauded her for her presenting abilities.
