First look as Brookside legend Claire Sweeney debuts as Evelyn’s heroin addict daughter in Coronation Street

-

The first image of Cassandra Plummer, Claire Sweeney’s crazy new soap character, has been released by Coronation Street. She appears to be a far cry from Brookside native and former gangster Lindsey Corkhill.

The purportedly deceased mother of Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall), Cassie, will make her debut the next week, making Evelyn (Maureen Lipman) feel guilty and fearful that her entire life will be turned upside down.

Cassie is in a terrible situation; she is engulfed in a heroin addiction, finds up in the hospital, and needs her mother’s assistance more than ever.

So, she’s an addict, which is why she’s so unpredictable, said TV presenter and actress Claire.

She genuinely does have good intentions to get better and be with the family, but she is an addict, and it is really pretty tragic. That makes her a loose cannon. People are unaware that Evelyn has been dating Cassie for some time.

Then she shows up; she needs some mother; she wants to see Tyrone; she wants to be clean; she wants to be connected with the family. She’s a difficult young lady. She has encountered difficulties before.

However, she has a vulnerability where she needs a mother, and her mother can help. She shows up to provide assistance.

Many people are accustomed to seeing Claire in glossy settings, so the actress is happy to play a very different part than she has in the past.

She remarked on its attraction and added, “I’m not vain. I’m an actress, and on the first day of filming on the cobblestones, one of the extras said to me, “Oh, we didn’t we didn’t recognise you!” I wanted her to be so far away from me because that is how I wanted to be.

I kind of transform into that character the moment I put on the leggings, converse, and helmet, looking extremely tough. I don’t know that far yet, but it would be interesting to see if she does end up a little more glam if everything works out.

“As an actress, you just want to be quite removed from yourself, and I think it’s absolutely brilliant.” Of course she is!

Claire has nothing but respect for the makeup artists that struggled to create Cassie’s look despite her tragic circumstances.

It wasn’t much, but that’s how I get out of bed every morning! She made a joke, laughing. They did a terrific job, I must say. Additionally, Julita [a makeup artist] greased my hair and sprayed black dye at the roots.

I had to have my nails and eyelashes cut, which was quite upsetting to me as a Scouser.

“Cassie is really, really naked.” The makeup artist did an amazing job of making me look as rugged as possible.

Of course, Claire will always be remembered for her role as Lindsey Corkhill in Brookie, a soap opera that, along with Corrie, helped pioneer the genre.

Even though she is already soap opera royalty, Claire stated that she experiences “imposter syndrome” in her new role, especially when she first steps onto the cobblestones.

I had the impression that I was sneaking into a tour! I was in awe of it! Sincerely, I’m such a fan,’ she grinned.

And I’m very appreciative of having this job and getting to portray Cassie. It’s literally a dream come true, I can’t even tell you. As I previously stated, give me Corrie any day if given the choice between it and Hollywood! Hollywood wasn’t an option, but to me, it’s the same thing since it’s just so fantastic!

It is a building. We’ve all grown up with this soap. I’ve always believed that Corrie would be my ideal soap opera to work on if I were to do another. While viewing that, I grew.

As a child, I recall sitting down and becoming fixated on Pat Phoenix at first, then Bet Lynch. I also recall a scenario in which Bet Lynch was crying in the Rovers’ back room.

She had broken up with her partner, or she had experienced some terrible circumstances. She then rose up and put on her game face so she could enter the Rovers.

“And just the difference as she walked through – it stuck with me that as a kid, just to watch her grow in stature and get the brave face.” She continued in the same manner, “This isn’t a smile. It’s the cover over a scream.

“Corrie is a dream role,” the actor said. “It’s just been iconic and part of my childhood, and all these wonderful women in the show over the years, and the comedy.”

Cassie clearly fits the mould of a classic Corrie female character—vulnerable yet warrior-like—and Claire has promised some really significant material in the coming episodes.

She reassured us, “She’s going to cause chaos.” She is really volatile. Ian Kershaw wrote my first significant scene, and it was fantastic.

The writing is excellent, but I’m also beginning to read scripts, which I find to be extremely humorous. You not only have fantastic dramatic plots, but you also have the hilarious Corrie wit that we all adore.

“The wonderful thing about Corrie is that you can be laughing one minute and crying the next,” said someone.

I simply want to add something about Iain [MacLeod, the head of Coronation Street]. I’ve had minor roles in the last few years’ productions of Benidorm and Scarborough, a drama I recorded last year, but I’ve been itching to return and perform some truly outstanding acting.

I had no idea Corrie would be the subject. Iain has given me a chance, and sometimes all it takes is for one person to have faith in you and tell you that you can succeed. Take a chance on her. And for that, I’m very appreciative.
